Lab 1930. Fotografia contemporanea
We are a small, cosy gallery located in Milan's Porta Romana district.
Founded in 2022 by Elena Carotti, an art historian with 20 years' experience in contemporary art publishing, the gallery's activities include:
- The promotion and sale of works by represented artist photographers;
- Consulting on the formation and development of photographic collections;
- Editorial consultancy for dummy and photobook production.
Lab 1930. Fotografia Contemporanea primarily represents mid-career authors and focuses on the latest trends in contemporary photography.
Photographic works in this genre are often unique or in very limited editions, experimenting with new languages and powerful narratives. This dilutes the classical boundaries of photography, with the distinction between photography and contemporary art becoming increasingly blurred.
To broaden our view of contemporaneity, we decided to give promising young artists under the age of 27 the opportunity to engage with the art market. Thus, the Lab 1930 YOUNG project was born in 2025, showcasing the works of talented young artists once a year.
Therefore, it is clear that our name was not chosen at random. 'Lab' – short for 'laboratory' – carries with it the ideas of experimentation and exploration, encouraging you to tread new paths of knowledge and open up to a different way of seeing.
And why 1930? The gallery space dates back to that year, as evidenced by the burgundy and black chequered floor. This was the era of the Bauhaus, one of the most innovative and experimental movements of the 20th century.
